What Is The NDIS
Understanding the NDIS and How It Can Work for You
At Camila Support Services, we believe everyone deserves clear, honest information about the supports available to them. The National Disability Insurance Scheme can open the door to greater independence and choice, but the language and process can feel overwhelming when you are starting out.

This page explains what the scheme is, who can access it and how funding works, in plain terms. As a dedicated NDIS provider, we are here to answer your questions and walk beside you at whatever stage you have reached.

What Is the NDIS?
The NDIS is an Australian Government scheme that funds disability supports for people with permanent and significant disability. It is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), and it provides funding for the supports each person needs rather than a fixed set of services.

The heart of the scheme is choice and control. Participants decide which supports matter most, who delivers them and how they fit into daily life.

How Does the NDIS Work?
Once the NDIA approves access, each participant receives a personalised plan that outlines their goals and funded supports. Funding is spread across categories such as daily living, community participation and building new skills.

Because every plan is shaped around the individual, two people with the same diagnosis can receive very different supports.

Am I Eligible for the NDIS?
You may be eligible for NDIS if you:
  • Are under 65 years of age when you apply
  • Are an Australian citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder
  • Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your everyday activities
  • Need support now or are likely to need it over the long term
If you are unsure, our team can help you understand the requirements and gather the right information for your access request.
How Do I Get Started With the NDIS?
The pathway has a few clear stages:
  • Check Your Eligibility: Review the criteria and speak with us if you have questions.
  • Submit an Access Request: Contact the NDIA and provide evidence of your disability from your health professionals.
  • Build Your Plan: Attend a planning meeting to discuss your goals and support needs.
  • Choose Your Providers: Select the people and organisations you want working with you.
  • Start Your Supports: Begin using your funding and review how things are going.
How Do I Prepare for a Planning Meeting?
Gather any reports from your doctors and therapists, and think about your daily routine, what is working and what is not. Bring a family member or support person if you would like extra backing.

The more detail you share about your life and ambitions, the more accurately your plan can reflect what you genuinely need.

How Can I Use My NDIS Funding?
You can choose how your funding is managed. Self-managed participants control payments and have the greatest flexibility, while plan-managed participants have a provider handle invoices and budgets for them.

With NDIA-managed funding, the agency pays providers directly, though this generally means using registered providers only.

What Happens If My Needs Change?
Life changes, and your plan can change with it. If your circumstances, health or goals shift, you can ask for a plan review so your funding continues to match your situation.

We can help you work out what to raise and how to explain the difference these supports make.
